How many of us have walked around a supermarket and been pulled in by the clever marketing from the top skin care brands? Words like targeting spots, bacterial fighting and clearer skin? Anybody spent a small fortune only to find none of it works? ME! The truth is that acne can have a real impact on your self-confidence and at this moment of vulnerability we will all try anything at any cost if it may help!

In this blog I would like to share with you the industries secrets of truly getting rid of acne, a guide to help you navigate through the sea of million pound marketing campaigns to the simple truth!

It’s not a certain product, the brand name, the packaging that helps! It’s the ingredients it contains and at what strength!

The key ingredients that you need to look out for are benzyl peroxides, topical antibiotics, salicylic acid and tretinion. All products have varied strengths or combinations of these ingredients. Benzyl peroxides and salicylic acid are contained in over the counter products but at fairly weak concentrations and you may need to visit a doctor to obtain the highest strength products, while topic antibiotics and tretinion are only available from a doctor.

My Favourite Product: Obagi Cleziderm System

It is not all about what you put on your skin! Two of the most effective treatments for acne are oral antibiotics and the oral contraceptive pill.

Antibiotics to consider include Lymecycline and Oxytetracycline. The first favored for it’s twice a day dosing, but both in six monthly courses can reduce acne especially inflammatory spots. My two cautions with this is women of child bearing age must use contraception as it can cause fetal defects and those choosing to use the antibiotics in the summer must use sun protection as if can cause the skin to easily burn in the sun.

My preferred antibiotic: Lymecycline

Contraceptive pills to consider are Dianette and Yasmin. Both combined oral contraceptive pills, which means they contain both female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Dianette is the preferred choice as it is licensed for the use in acne but Yasmin also has a beneficial effect on the skin and helps to reduce spots. The advantage that Yasmin has over Dianette is that it can be used longer term; Dianette is strictly to used for one year only. Before starting any contraceptive pill first visit your GP who will screen you for suitability. Patient who are no suitable include those over age of 35, smokers, obese patients and those with a family history of DVT/PE.

My preferred Contraceptive Pill: Yasmin

I hope that these two universal truths help you in seeking the best treatment for you! We all deserve beautiful spot free skin! Please feel free to comment with any questions you may have!
